Sometimes you just gotta take a step back, and try something different. No no no, I don’t mean don’t pick your kid up for the weekend, don’t wear aftershave, don’t drive in the opposite lane, don’t get another job, don’t style your hair differently, don’t act inappropriately at work, don’t sing in the elevator because you never have, don’t go up the down escalator, don’t go through the car wash backwards, none of these things.
I’m talking about taking a step back and trying something different with your coffee. Your stale, boring, daily routine. If this is how you feel then listen up: CHANGE IT. Right now. Today. Simple.
Step away from your espresso machine, be it a Krups $49 jobby or an Eye-Tal-Yan fancy $2000 one. Try something else. Reach for that dusty ‘ole French Press. Yeah, you know the one. What, you have to find it in the back of your cabinet? Go ahead, I’ll wait.
There’s just something satisfying about the French Press. You needa coffee but don’t feel like the sock-you-in-the-mouth treatment of a demitasse of espresso, or a milky coffee drink. That’s fine, we’ve all been there. I call it “same-coffee-exhaustion” and it is a real problem and not well-documented.
So you’ve found it, dusted it off, and ground your coffee to the right setting. Pour in your water at whatever temp you like, and then wait those loooooong 4 minutes of steeping time. Feels like an eternity and you’re biting your nails because you Need. Your. Fix. Then you plunge it down, the feeling satisfyingly manual and controlled. Choose whichever mug is yer favorite.
Pour it, there is a smile on your face already and you haven’t even had a sip yet! Job well-done. Coffee well-assembled and prepared. Bring that mug up to your lips, the scent hits you first curling your nose hairs, and you just feeeeeeeeeel it. You know what is about to happen, anticipation hits, and from that second on, everything is alright.
Permagrin.
